Interpreting Intern/Mentee

Position Purpose

Observes and participates in interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hearing consumers in a variety of educational and community settings including medical, mental health, vocational and social services. Conducts regular self-assessments and communicates directly with assigned mentor and the mentor program supervisor regarding assignments, concerns, and/or questions regarding progress in the mentor program. Position is expected to learn the business of interpreting and to understand the differences and challenges of the various roles, to include independent contractor, staff, educational and community interpreter, while also improving signing skills to become a fully certified interpreter. Participates in mock interpreting assignments, as well as a local Deaf or Hard of Hearing community volunteer project. May perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Receives direct mentoring, supervision and professional development through an assigned mentor in an effort to enhance interpreting skills and professionalism in the interpreting field
  • Develops personal and professional training goals with interpreting department that are in line with school or educational program interpreting standards
  • Works with staff and agency to support needed services that provide practice time in sign language and knowledge of interpreting business practices, which may include responding to interpreting requests, practicing scheduling (the analysis of who), and resolving interpreting complaints, challenging situations, or consumer questions
  • Observes and participates in interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hearing consumers in a variety of educational and community settings including medical, mental health, vocational, social services, etc.
  • Conducts regular self-assessments and communicates directly with assigned mentor and the mentor program supervisor regarding assignments, concerns, and/or questions regarding progress in the mentor program
  • Assists with interpreting assignment scheduling; answers telephones and resolves/routes inquiries and issue appropriately
  • Views video tapes and works with point-to-point video communication systems to practice signing skills
  • Participates in mock interpreting assignments
  • Participates in a local Deaf or Hard of Hearing community volunteer project
  • Maintains an ongoing program journal to document performance improvement and areas needing improvement
  • Maintains high professional standards in accordance with the RID Code of Professional Conduct, ensuring quality interpreting services for the Deaf and Hearing consumers
  • May drive agency or personal vehicle on company business

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in ITP, and completion of program within 1 year
  • Provisional ACDHH licensure and passing score on written RID or NIC exam
  • Obtain State of Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card and pass drug screening
  • Valid Arizona Driver License, proof of insurance and Arizona Motor Vehicle Division 39 month Motor Vehicle Report
