Vista Volunteers In Service To America

Position Purpose

Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona is a not for profit health and human services organization serving the 9 counties in Southern Arizona for over 80 years. CCS serves over 100,000 persons each year in programs such as adoptions, early childhood education, child welfare, services to older adults, health and dental care for the uninsured, asset development for low income families, services to persons with disabilities and those who are Deaf and Deaf Blind, immigration assistance, refugee assistance, support to those in prison, case management, counseling, basic needs assistance, housing for homeless families and older adults.
CCS is assisting in responding to the crisis of immigrant women and children traveling through Tucson on their way to other parts of the county to join family members. These women and children come with almost no money or material goods and need humanitarian assistance to continue on their journey. A VISTA member is needed to help coordinate the volunteers, humanitarian assistance donations and to organize the community-wide response to meeting the needs of these women and children.

Essential Functions


A. Volunteer Coordination: The VISTA will recruit, train, schedule, and coordinate volunteers to provide support for immigrant women and children. They will also improve current recruitment and training systems such as the volunteer screening process, scheduling, volunteer duties, and other procedures as needed.
B. Resource Development: The VISTA will organize the solicitation of items needed for humanitarian assistance for each immigrant family unit. They will also work with the community network to solicit items from businesses, faith communities, and other interested parties.
C. Advocacy and Case Management: The VISTA will provide advocacy/case management to assess the needs of immigrants and to assist them in contacting family members to purchase transportation or to reunite with them. This will include assisting with their travel plans and documents, along with other items they will need for travel.
D. Program Development: The VISTA will work with volunteers to assist those in need of overnight

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Skills and Abilities

 College Degree required or equivalent experience
 18 years or older, no upper age limit. All ages are welcome and encouraged to apply
 Computer and Internet/Email and Microsoft Office Suite experience and ability to use
 Familiarity with human and/or social service programs
 Fluency in Spanish
 Capacity for creative planning and implementation and ability to participate in collaborative activities
 Strong writing skills, experience writing grants a plus
 Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting in a consistent, energetic, positive manner
 Self-motivated and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
 Effective problem solving skills and ability to understand "big picture" while completing detail oriented tasks
 Ability and desire to work with a variety of diverse individuals
 Friendly and effective interpersonal skills and a healthy sense of humor
 Team player (flexible, open-minded, willing, committed)
 Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with staff, clients, and the public
 Ability to work on more than one project and complete assignments
 Consistent and reliable access to a vehicle
 Willing to work some evenings or weekends

 Living allowance - $11,676 for year of service
 Housing stipend - $100 per month
 Choice of a $5,730 education award OR a $1,500 cash stipend upon completion of service
